Like Lemmings off a cliff

The former President of the United States, Donald Trump, is a pathological liar.  And I’m not talking a bending-the-truth, shades-of-gray, depends-on-your-perspective kind of liar, I’m talking a black-is white, up-is-down, I-couldn’t-have-eaten-the-last-cookie-because-I-was-on-the-moon-at-the-time, with-Steve, kind of liar.

And we know this.  See this cover of Time magazine?…

Trump on Time cover - FAKE!

In June of 2017, The Washington Post reported:

The framed copy of Time magazine was hung up in at least five of President Trump’s clubs, from South Florida to Scotland. Filling the entire cover was a photo of Donald Trump.

“Donald Trump: The ‘Apprentice’ is a television smash!” the big headline said. Above the Time nameplate, there was another headline in all caps: “TRUMP IS HITTING ON ALL FRONTS . . . EVEN TV!”

This cover — dated March 1, 2009 — looks like an impressive memento from Trump’s pre-presidential career. To club members eating lunch, or golfers waiting for a pro-shop purchase, it seemed to be a signal that Trump had always been a man who mattered. Even when he was just a reality TV star, Trump was the kind of star who got a cover story in Time.

But that wasn’t true.

The Time cover is a fake.

There was no March 1, 2009, issue of Time magazine. And there was no issue at all in 2009 that had Trump on the cover.

This is sad and pathetic.  But it’s not news and not my point this morning.  It was clear from the outset that Trump was not suited for the job of president, and he made that abundantly clear while doing the job of president.  My point is not to look back but to look forward, because some would like to see him returned to the White House, and some so cravenly have abdicated their moral duty as elected representatives of the people of the United States that they will lie with him and for him to assure their own jobs and help him win the one he lost back.

Politicians lie.  Even good ones.  But generally they do so about personal matters — think Bill Clinton and his affair with Monica Lewinsky; think Larry Craig’s "wide stance" when going to the bathroom in a public restroom at the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport.  The “personal” nature of these matters doesn’t excuse the lying, but at the end of the day both men were just trying to get their jollies, got caught, and tried to conceal the embarrassing truth from family, spouses, and voters.

Donald Trump is not that kind of liar.  He is an inventor of truth, which is oxymoronic.  His need to be important, to matter, and to win at all costs is so deeply rooted in his twisted psyche that he will do anything and say anything to feed it, even calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to release any damaging information he has about the Biden family at a time when President Biden is deftly trying to avoid a wider conflict that could plunge the world into war because of the insanity and vicious madness of Putin’s invasion of his sovereign democratic neighbor, Ukraine.  Were Trump a better student of history, or just a better student, he would know the adage "politics stops at the water's edge” was asserted in 1948 by then-chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Republican Arthur Vandenberg, at the time a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination to face President Truman in the Fall before he dropped out of the race, and was immortalized in the Vandenberg Resolution passed by the Senate to ensure cooperation with the Democrats and the Truman administration in forging bipartisan support for NATO to deter Russian/Soviet aggression against the West.  My how times have changed! — a would-be Republican presidential nominee, the front-runner in fact, supporting a Democratic president in office on a matter of grave national security and foreign policy vs. a would-be Republican presidential nominee, the front-runner in fact, calling on the country's and the world’s number one enemy, Russian no less, to undermine a Democratic president in office on a matter of grave national security and foreign policy.

It’s bad enough that Trump lies and puts his own fortunes ahead of the interests of the country he seeks to lead again, but like Lemmings off a cliff he has convinced Republicans across the country to join his national suicide pact.  Republican House member Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan has drunk the Trump-flavored Kool-Aid.  So desperate to win the approval of Donald Trump at his rally this weekend in her state, she told the adoring crowd of MAGA-ites there to worship at the feet of the orange buffoon that the former president had "caught Osama bin Laden.”

Ahem.  [clears throat]  bin Laden was killed on May 2, 2011.  President Barack Obama was the leader who, as US Commander-in-Chief, oversaw the operation and gave the order that led to America vanquishing the world’s most wanted terrorist.  Donald Trump, at the time, was hosting the season of The Celebrity Apprentice on tv featuring Meat Loaf.

Oh would that were the end of her pandering lies!  "Under President Trump — if my memory serves me correctly — I don't believe we had any wars.”  She may want to check with the people of the village of al-Ghayil in Yemen; in January of 2017, just weeks after Donald Trump was sworn in as president, US troops carried out a raid there on his orders in support of Saudi Arabia that marked the start of his presidency with bloodshed.  Hell, don’t ask the Yemenis!  You can hear it straight from the  horse’s  jackass’ mouth:  Trump himself called the raid “highly successful,” as reported by Reuters.  Not to belabor the point, but while you’re at it thoughtful reader, ask the people of Syria, or Afghanistan, how they feel about Rep. McClain’s “no wars” claim.  Next she’ll claim that it was really Donald Trump, and not lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, that landed Apollo 11 on the moon July 20th, 1969, even though we all know Captain Bone Spurs was busy dodging the Vietnam War draft at the time.

There’s more!

"I think he made three peace treaties.”  Rep. McClain could have checked to see how many so-called peace treaties Trump “made” so she could avoid having to use the ambiguous phrase “I think,” and I’d expect a member of the House of Representatives to insist on that kind of precision and accuracy from her speechwriters, but hey!…who’s gonna check?  I think she is referring to the Trump administration's Abraham Accords between Israel and some of its Arab neighbors, but I don’t really know.  Next she’ll have him as a signatory to the Declaration of Independence, and author of the Magna Carta.

If the truth, and the facts that support it don’t matter, nothing does.  Rep. McClain and an alarming number of other Republicans who are courting Trump’s blessing by vomiting this bunkum on the American people because they believe it helps them acquire or retain political power have turned their sights on democracy in service of a dangerously insecure and psychologically damaged man using them, and the voters stupid enough to trust them, to return himself to power so he can play footsie with autocrats, dictators, and war criminals.  This is how the story of America ends, unless we insist on fact-checking and this flagrant revisionism is edited out of the final draft.
